Wednesday, December 30th (Dey 9th), Iran Local Time UTC/GMT +4:30 hours:

5:24pm NEW! CNN – The nephew of Iranian opposition leader Mir Hossein Moussavi was buried Wednesday, three days after he was killed in anti-government demonstrations.
Saeed Ali Moussavi’s body was delivered to his family early Wednesday and buried at Tehran’s Beheshteh Zahra cemetery around 10:30 a.m. (2 a.m. ET). There were no demonstrations or disturbances during the burial, and several plain-clothed and uniformed security personnel were patrolling the area. A reformist Web site, Parlemannews, had reported Tuesday that Moussavi’s body had disappeared, though the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) disputed that account. Moussavi was one of seven people killed in the riots Sunday, according to Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi, Tehran’s chief prosecutor. The toll meant the riots were the bloodiest since June, when protests over the disputed presidential election that gave Ahmadinejad a second term left at least eight dead.

Tuesday, December 29th (Dey 8th), Iran Local Time UTC/GMT +4:30 hours:

1:46pm NEW! BBC – The nephew of Iran’s opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi was threatened days before he was killed in Sunday’s protests, a prominent supporter says. Mohsen Makhmalbaf, a film-maker based in Paris, told the BBC that secret police called Seyed Ali Mousavi several times, saying: “We will kill you.” But a police statement reportedly said Mr Mousavi was killed by “terrorists”. Meanwhile a regional representative of Iran’s supreme leader said opposition leaders should be executed. “Those who are behind the current sedition in the country … are mohareb [enemies of God] and the law is very clear about punishment of a mohareb,” state media quoted Ayatollah Abbas Vaez-Tabasi, an influential figure in Khorasan province, as saying. The sentence for mohareb under Iran’s Sharia law is death.

3:50pm NEW! CNN – Iran’s influential parliament speaker Ali Larijani said Tuesday that authorities should mete out “the harshest punishment” to protesters who disrupted Ashura observances. Addressing lawmakers, Larijani said the protesters had insulted Imam Hussein, whose death is commemorated during the religious observance. He urged officials to “arrest offenders of the religion and mete out harshest punishments to such anti-revolutionary figures with no mercy.” Larijani also slammed Britain and the United States for condemning a government crackdown on the weekend’s protesters, and said Iran would summon Britain’s ambassador in Tehran to protest.

2:25pm NEW! CNN – An Iranian national security official has called for demonstrators to be arrested following deadly weekend anti-government protests in Tehran. “The undignified and disruptive behavior of the rioters is no longer tolerable for our people, since they have brought undignified behaviors to new heights by offending sanctities and values held dear in Islam and Iran,” Naghavi Hosseini, a member of the Parliamentary National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, told state-run IRNA. “The Nation’s Judiciary must swiftly arrest the rioters who committed those crimes.”

Sunday, December 27th (Dey 6th), Iran Local Time UTC/GMT +4:30 hours:

9:55pm NEW! BBC – Opposition sources in Iran say that at least eight protesters have been killed amid violence between anti-government crowds and police. The nephew of former presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi was among four killed in Tehran, and reports say four also died in the city of Tabriz. Security forces reportedly opened fire in Tehran after losing control. Police later said 300 people were arrested. It is almost certainly the worst loss of life in protests since June.

2:30pm NEW! BBC – Fierce clashes have erupted between Iranian security forces and opposition demonstrators trying to gather in the centre of the capital, Tehran. Unconfirmed reports say at least one person has been shot dead. Iranian opposition parties had called on people to take to the streets as the Shia Muslim festival of Ashura reached a climax. People were chanting “Khamenei will be toppled”, opposition sources said, a reference to Iran’s Supreme Leader. Initial reports said the security forces fired in the air as they moved to disperse demonstrators, but there are several different reports all saying that at least one, and possibly as many as four demonstrators, have been shot dead.

Saturday, December 26th (Dey 5th), Iran Local Time UTC/GMT +4:30 hours:

Some reports say shots have been fired in the air to disperse demonstrators in the centre of the capital. Clashes were also reported in northern Tehran, where reformist ex-President Mohammad Khatami had been due to speak.

The opposition had sought to use Shia religious festivals this weekend to show its defiance of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s government. Police chief Esmail Ahmadi Moghaddam has been quoted as warning that police would crack down hard against any attempts to use Shia religious processions to stage fresh protests against Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s government.

Mr Mousavi had run the institution, affiliated to the president’s office, since its inception 11 years ago. In recent days, hardliners have urged Iran’s judiciary to put Mr Mousavi on trial for instigating unrest.

12:56pm BBC – Iranian security forces have clashed with crowds of opposition supporters in the city of Isfahan, according to reports on an opposition website. Activists said police had used tear gas and batons to disperse people gathering to commemorate Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri, who died at the weekend. On Monday, tens of thousands attended his funeral in the holy city of Qom – many shouting anti-government slogans.

The Rahesabz website said crowds of opposition supporters gathered at a mosque in Isfahan for a memorial service for the ayatollah. But hundreds of police and plain-clothes security officers were already there. The website said many opposition supporters were injured and there were a number of arrests. BBC Tehran correspondent Jon Leyne says the confrontations are all part of a build-up to a big series of demonstrations expected at the weekend.

Monday, December 21st (Azar 30th), Iran Local Time UTC/GMT +4:30 hours:

7:18pm BBC – Iranian reformists have clashed with police after the funeral of a dissident cleric, opposition websites say. Earlier, tens of thousands took part in a procession for Grand Ayatollah Hoseyn Ali Montazeri in the holy city of Qom. Clashes reportedly broke out, but the scale of the confrontation is not clear, says a BBC correspondent.

Montazeri – who died aged 87 of natural causes in Qom on Saturday night – had decried President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s re-election in June as a fraud. The reformist Jaras website said mourners chanted slogans in support of the cleric and also of opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi. Mr Mousavi took part in the procession, along with fellow opposition leader Mehdi Karroubi.

Another site, Rahesabz.net, said some members of the hardline pro-government faction Ansar Hezbollah tried to stop chanting in the crowd, but left “after clashing with some people”. Many mourners were carrying green banners or wearing green – the colour of Iran’s opposition.

Three were charged with premeditated murder for participating in the beatings; nine will face other unspecified charges. The judiciary did not identify the defendants. Kahrizak officials initially had said that Mohsen Rouhol-Amini, Amir Javadifar, and Mohammad Kamrani died of meningitis, according to the judiciary. However, a coroner’s reported indicated that the three were severely beaten behind bars by prison personnel, and died from their injuries. The judiciary also blamed the prison’s medical shortcomings and sub-par conditions as factors in the men’s deaths.
